Earlier this evening, Bob McKenzie announced via Twitter that the New York Rangers have traded Dylan McIlrath to the Florida Panthers for Steve Kampfer and a conditional seventh round pick.

If McIlrath plays 30 games for Florida this season, the Rangers get a 2018 seventh round pick from the Panthers. If he fails to reach that mark, there is no draft pick involved in the deal.

This announcement is not surprising given what had happened this season. McIlrath was good in training camp and in the preseason, but failed to really ever gain the trust of Alain Vigneault, who preferred playing Nick Holden and keeping Adam Clendening as the team’s seventh defenseman.

In return, the Rangers get 28 year old Kampfer. It’s not a tremendous return, but he was solid for the Panthers in the past. He had four points in the past two seasons, playing 25 games in the 2014-15 season and 47 games last year. In his rookie season with Boston in 2010-11, he tallied five goals and five assists in 38 games.

This ends the long saga with Dylan McIlrath. Personally, I’m very disappointed with how the Rangers handled this situation. After drafting him 10th overall in the 2010 draft, over guys like Vladimir Tarasenko and Cam Fowler, and after rehabbing him through knee injuries, this marks that they’re just giving up on him.

Let’s be real, McIlrath was never going to be the next Bobby Orr or anything like that, but he definitely could have been, and may still be, a solid third pairing guy. When he played last year, he was fine, even pretty darn good at times, scoring four points (2-2-4) in 34 games.

I’m happy for Dylan McIlrath, because he has a much better chance at playing with the Panthers. They just recalled Jakub Kindl but they didn’t use him in the playoffs after acquiring him at the trade deadline last season. So maybe McIlrath will get a call-up.

And hey, we might get to see the Keith Yandle and Dylan McIlrath pairing yet again.
