Jesper Fast recalled from Hartford; Malone and Allen reassigned

Jesper Fast has been recalled from the Hartford Wolf Pack, and will likely slot into the fourth line for New York when they face the Pittsburgh Penguins tomorrow night.

This evening, the Rangers made a few roster moves, recalling Jesper Fast from Hartford and reassigning Ryan Malone and Connor Allen to the Wolf Pack.

Connor Allen was sent down as a result of John Moore finishing his five game suspension. Allen didn’t look out of place at the NHL level, but it was basically a choice between him and Matt Hunwick or Michael Kostka, who have been steady replacing the injured Rangers’ defensemen.

Ryan Malone, who never really fit into Vigneault’s system according to the head coach, has struggled to find a consistent place in the Rangers’ lineup. Malone has not registered a point, and has 14 hits so far.

Jesper Fast will be back in a Rangers uniform, after playing very well in Hartford since he was demoted. Fast, 22, has recorded one goal and eight assists in 11 games since he rejoined the Wolf Pack, tallying a point in seven of his last eight games. He also had a six game point-streak with the Rangers’ AHL affiliate.

With the Rangers, Fast skated in three games and did not have any points, playing primarily on the fourth line in those three games.

One problem that the Rangers have had is having a fourth line that will create some offense every once in a while, as well as providing good defense during their time on the ice.

Fast will likely slide into the fourth line tomorrow night against the Penguins.

What would be ideal is for Kevin Hayes and Anthony Duclair to slide up to the third line alongside Carl Hagelin, a line that played well together at the end of the game against Edmonton. This would create a fourth line of Jesper Fast, Dominic Moore and Lee Stempniak, who would handle the tough defensive assignments and appears to be a line that could create a bit of offense. Dominic Moore is known as a solid defensive player, and Lee Stempniak has been one of the best two way forwards for the Rangers this season.

Kevin Hayes 10-19

Kevin Hayes will be taking over third lie center duties for the Rangers, and ideally would play with Hagelin and Duclair on the wings, creating a skilled line thats fast on the wings, something that Vigneault likes. This can only happen if Tanner Glass is the one rep;aced by Jesper Fast.

Unfortunately, the Tanner Glass experiment is still going on, and AV shows no signs of sitting the 30-year old veteran. In 14 games, Glass has no points, and has eight shots on goal with a minus-seven rating. Glass has played on the penalty kill, but has gone largely unnoticed on the ice.

Since Vigneault has consistently stuck with Tanner Glass, it appears that Anthony Duclair would be the odd man out, but nothing is confirmed.

The lineup for tomorrow’s game is yet to be seen, but it will be interesting to see the decision that Vigneault makes with the bottom two lines.
