Series Preview, Round 3: Rangers vs. Lightning

Last night, the Rangers became the first team in NHL history to overcome a 3-1 series deficit in consecutive years following Derek Stepan’s overtime heroics at Madison Square Garden, sending his team back to the Eastern Conference Finals for the second consecutive year, and the third time in the past four years.
Now, the Rangers and the Tampa Bay Lightning will face off in the postseason for the first time ever, fighting for a chance to play for the Stanley Cup. But connections and bloodlines run deep with these teams, making this matchup truly special.
On March 5th, 2014, just hours before the trade deadline ended, the Rangers traded their captain, Ryan Callahan, as well as two draft picks to the Tampa Bay Lightning for their captain, future hall of famer Martin St. Louis. Contract negotiations between Ryan Callahan and Glen Sather went downhill, and the relationship between Martin St. Louis and Steve Yzerman had soured, prompting St. Louis to request a trade to the one place he wanted to be; New York. Zuccarello’s Garden appearance is good news for Rangers, fans

During Game 5 at Madison Square Garden last night, the jumbotron, known as “Gardenvision,” showed the injured Rangers winger Mats Zuccarello watching the game from the press box. Immediately, the Rangers fans showered him with chants of “Zucc!” He played it cool with a quick wave to the crowd, but later had a huge smile on his face.
When Derick Brassard handed the Broadway hat over to Ryan McDonagh, Mats Zuccarello was seen in applauding his teammates in the background. You can see that video here.
For the fans, it was very reassuring to see Zuccarello looking happy and healthy at the Garden. Some wild rumors have been going around, with people saying anything from him being in a coma and not walking to having his career over. Yesterday laid all of that to rest, but the extent of the Norwegian winger’s injuries were already known. Read the rest of this entry
Henrik Lundqvist named a finalist for the NHL Foundation Player Award

On Friday afternoon, the National Hockey League announced that San Jose Sharks defenseman Brent Burns, Calgary Flames defenseman Mark Giordano and New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist were announced as the three finalists for the NHL Foundation Player Award, presented to “an NHL player who applies the core values of hockey – commitment, perseverance and teamwork – to enrich the lives of people in his community.”
Each NHL team submitted finalists for the NHL Fourdation Player award, and the three finalists were chosen by a panel of judges. The recipient of the award will receive a $25,000 check from the NHL Foundation to their chosen charity. The winner will be chosen during the 2015 NHL Awards, which will take place on June 24th in Las Vegas.
Not only has Henrik Lundqvist been a dominant performer on the ice, but he has been a dominant force when it comes to philanthropy and helping others in need. Not only is the spokesperson for the Garden of Dreams Foundation, a position he has held since 2009, but he also supports 28 nonprofit charities through the Henrik Lundqvist Foundation. Series Preview, Round 2: Rangers vs. Capitals

For the fourth time in the last five seasons, the New York Rangers and the Washington Capitals will face off in the playoffs. If the past matchups are indicative of this year’s playoff series, Rangers and Capitals fans are in for a treat.
After a grueling seven game series with the New York Islanders, the Capitals were able to come away with a 2-1 win in the final game of the series, limiting the Islanders to just 11 shots on goal and advancing to face the New York Rangers.
The last time that the Rangers and Capitals met in the postseason was back in 2013, with the Rangers coming away with the series win in seven games. With the Capitals up 3-2 heading into Game 6, Henrik Lundqvist came through in the clutch, delivering back-to-back shutouts to give New York the series win. Read the rest of this entry
Rangers Practice Report; Zuccarello out indefinitely, Klein in, Hartford Call Up

In Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals against the Pittsburgh Penguins, Mats Zuccarello was struck in the head by Ryan McDonagh’s slap shot. Play continued, and Zuccarello seemed a bit woozy getting back to the bench. A few minutes later, he headed to the locker room.
This afternoon, the Rangers announced that Zuccarello would be out “indefinitely” with an upper body injury, not specifying any type of injury or the length that he would be sidelined.
While it’s probably not smart to jump to conclusions, Zuccarello could be dealing with a concussion. It would answer the question of why he didn’t return to Game 5, and is a logical possibility when someone is struck in the head by a piece of vulcanized rubber traveling at 85+ miles per hour. He also had no visible injuries, so a concussion seems to be the only logical explanation for an “upper-body injury.” Read the rest of this entry
