The Rangers will be looking to continue their march to the playoffs and towards the President’s trophy, but for the first time in nearly two months, they get to do that with Henrik Lundqvist back in net. Photo courtesy of MSG Photos.

Following a nice rebound win against the hottest team in the NHL, the Ottawa Senators, on Thursday, the Rangers (47-19-7) will now take on arguably the coldest team in the NHL when they matchup against the Boston Bruins (36-25-13), a team that has lost their last six games.

This is the third and final matchup between these two teams this season, with the home team winning each of the first two games in this series. The Bruins shut out the Rangers 3-0 at TD Garden on January 15th, and the Rangers grinded out a 3-2 win at MSG. Cam Talbot was in net for both of those games, making 18 saves in the 3-2 win. Rick Nash, Derick Brassard, and Derek Stepan all scored in that game.

The Bruins are coming off of a devastating 3-2 overtime loss on Thursday against the Ducks, blowing a 2-1 lead with less than a minute to go. That gave them their sixth straight loss, and Boston is still fighting for their playoff lives. They are tied in the Senators with points, but Ottawa has one game in hand. Don’t count out Florida either, as they trail by just three points, and play the Bruins two more times this season. Needless to say, this is a crucial game for the Bruins. For the first time since February 2nd, a 6-3 win over the Florida Panthers, Henrik Lundqvist, the Rangers longtime franchise goalie, will be the starting goalie when New York takes on the struggling Boston Bruins, a team fighting for their playoff lives.

While there was no official announcement, Lundqvist tweeted “Almost 2 months. It’s been a rollercoaster of emotions but happy to finally be back. Let’s get it going, step by step.” He also followed that up with a picture of the mask he designed with Jeff Gordon on “The Mask.” These helmets are all game worn before being auctioned off for charity, so that practilly confirmed his return. An official announcement of the goalie will be made at 11:00 AM tomorrow.

On January 31st, Henrik Lundqvist took a puck to the throat in a freak accident, causing him to go down writhing in pain. He finished that game, allowing one goal, and started the next one as well, picking up a win against the Panthers. Read the rest of this entry

Following a disappointing loss on Tuesday against the Kings, the Rangers (47-19-7) skated to a dominating 5-1 win against the hottest team in the NHL, making the Ottawa Senators (37-25-11) and Andrew Hammond, also known as the Hamburglar, look like a much worse team than they actually are.

With the win, the Rangers moved ahead of the Montreal Canadiens for sole possession of the first place spot in the Eastern Conference, and tied with the Anaheim Ducks for first in the President’s Trophy race. They also became the first team to clinch a playoff spot, and are very close to clinching home ice in the Metropolitan Division.

New York also hit the 100 point mark for just the eighth time in franchise history, and did so in only 73 games. That is tied for the second fastest it has taken to get 100 points in franchise history. Read the rest of this entry

The Rangers (46-19-7) are looking to build off of their tough loss on Tuesday when they head to Ottawa to take on the red-hot Ottawa Senators (37-24-11), and their rookie goalie sensation Andrew Hammond, lovingly dubbed the “Hamburglar.”

This is the second of three games between these two teams, and the only one being played in Ottawa. The Rangers came away with a 3-2 overtime victory at Madison Square Garden, the final game before the All Star Break. Kevin Hayes and Chris Kreider scored the two regulation goals, and Carl Hagelin scored the overtime winner. Henrik Lundqvist was in net, stopping 33 of the 35 shots he faced.

The Rangers have a chance to equal or eclipse the 100 point mark this season for just the eighth time in franchise history. The Rangers could also clinch a playoff spot in two ways; a win over Ottawa and a Boston loss against Anaheim tonight, or an overtime loss against Ottawa and a Boston regulation loss. The Rangers are now one step closer to getting their franchise goalie back on the ice, as he will be traveling with the team for the first time since his injury when they head to Ottawa to take on the red hot senators.

Lundqvist has been on the ice for a full practice and for a morning skate, taking both high and low shots, but still needs another practice or morning skate and a bit more time to prepare mentally for his return. Tomorrow night, Lundqvist will serve as backup to Cam Talbot on Thursday, with the goal of starting at least one of the games this weekend.

“Tommorow I am on the bench,” Lundqvist said following the team’s practice this morning. “It’s just good to be in the locker room, get the game feeling back, and then we’ll see which game I’ll play this weekend. It’s going to be a good feeling just to be back on the bench and we’ll take it from there.” Read the rest of this entry
