In an emotional, hard fought game that saw the Rangers tie the game with less than five minutes to go, the Garden crowd was left stunned following a questionable no call, and a Rangers’ defensive lapse allowed Joel Ward to score with less than two seconds in regulation, sealing a victory for the Capitals.
The Rangers came out of the gates blazing, and it looked like they were ready to totally take over the game. They were controlling possession, getting shots on net, and came close on a few occasions, but Holtby stood tall and the team defense from Washington was strong.
Eventually, Hart trophy finalist Alex Ovechkin took over the game, and the Rangers did not do a great job of containing him. Ovechkin dominated possession when he was on the ice, with a 71% corsi for during the first two periods. He also scored on the power play, again, the fifth time that he has scored on the man advantage against the Rangers this season. Going forward, Vigneault needs to do a better job of limiting his influence. Read the rest of this entry

In front of a raucous crowd at Madison Square Garden, Carl Hagelin’s wrist shot sent the fans into a frenzy, and sent the New York Rangers to the second round of the 2015 playoffs. For the second consecutive year, the Rangers eliminated the Pittsburgh Penguins from the playoffs, this time doing it in just five games.
The Rangers haven’t really been able to close out series quickly in recent memory, so this gives some of the players who are banged up extra time to rest. The last time the Rangers won a series in less than six games was back in 2008, when they beat the New Jersey Devils in five games.
Every game in the series has been a one goal game, and all four Rangers’ wins were 2-1 victories. The Rangers became just the second team in NHL history to win a playoff series without scoring three goals in any of the wins, and the first team in the 2000’s to do so. Read the rest of this entry

Kevin Hayes’ first career playoff goal could not have come at a better time, lifting the Rangers to a 2-1 overtime victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins at the CONSOL Energy Arena, and sending the Blueshirts back to Madison Square Garden with a commanding 3-1 series lead.
Although the Rangers had dominated first periods in this series, Penguins head coach Mike Johnston vowed that his team would come out with more fire, and play a better first 20 minutes. Pittsburgh did exactly that, completely outplaying the Rangers in every facet of the game, and limiting them to just two shots on goal in the period.
After the game, several Rangers including Lundqvist, Staal, Kreider, and others all said that Alain Vigneault really laid into the guys, firing them up and jumpstarting their performance in the second half. And around the 12 minute mark, Vigneault’s squad began to start playing their game again, leading to a Brassard goal in the second period and Hayes’ overtime winner. Read the rest of this entry

The Rangers needed a win in Game 3 in the first game of the series in Pittsburgh, and the road warrior Rangers played very well, coming away with a 2-1 victory to recapture home ice as well as taking a 2-1 series lead over the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Tonight’s game marked the 38th time in the past five postseasons that the Rangers have been involved in a game decided by one goal.
After a Game 2 where the Rangers seemed to lack the killer instinct and effort the Penguins brought, tonight was refreshing to watch. The Rangers were aggressively forechecking from the puck drop, and really pinned the Penguins in their own zone for the first two periods, not allowing a shot on goal for the first 15:10 of the game. Rangers drop Game Two to Penguins at MSG; Brassard scores again
Bobby Bevilacqua

The Rangers and the Penguins met again for Game Two at MSG, and the Penguins were able to pick up a win of their own tonght and send the series to Pittsburgh tied at one. Photo courtesy of MSG Photos.
Looking to string together two straight playoff wins, the Rangers were outplayed at home by the Pittsburgh Penguins, dropping Game Two by a final score of 4-3, partially due to an inept power play and subpar possession at five on five.
The big problem here was special teams. In the game, the Rangers had seven power play opportunities, scoring on just one of them. The Penguins were much more effective, scoring on their first two power play opportunities, and two of four for the night.
This was a much tighter game defensively. After the first period ended, shots were just 5-3 in favor of Pittsburgh, with the only goal coming from the Rangers. The Penguins really shut down the Rangers at even strength for most of the game, with 13 of the Rangers first 20 shots coming on the power play, and seven of those 13 shots coming on the sixth power play chance, which was a goal.
