On November 23rd, the Rangers (23-15-5) were up in the standings by seven points. After tonight’s loss to the rival Islanders (24-15-5), they trail the Capitals by 18 points. That’s a 25 point swing in less than two months.
The Rangers are no longer in first place, they sit in third in the Metropolitan. The Rangers are no longer a lock for the playoffs, because they’re just four points away from being kicked out of a wild card spot.
What’s worse? They totally deserved to win tonight. They Dominated, with a capital D, for the first two periods, and Jaroslav Halak stole the show. Three bad minutes in the third period undid everything they did in the rest of the game and handed the Rangers their 15th loss in the last 22 games. Read the rest of this entry

Last season, Kevin Hayes impressed everyone in his rookie season, moving to center, a position that he had rarely played before, leading the league in primary assists, and finishing with 45 points. But he’s a winger by trade, and the Rangers may be looking to utilize him on the wing long term.
With rookie forward Oscar Lindberg waiting in the wings, after developing in Hartford for the last two seasons, Alain VIgneault has a few options for the third line. But who should he choose to be the third line center? Read the rest of this entry
Which Rangers are primed for a breakout season?

Chris Kreider and Derek Stepan are just two of the young players in the Rangers roster. But which one will have a breakout season? Photo courtesy of Getty Images.
Although many fans of rival teams will say that the Rangers’ roster is full of aging players and no youth, that statement is totally false. In fact, the Rangers went from having a very thin farm system, to being loaded with goaltending talent, and having guys like Anthony Duclair, Brady Skjei and Pavel Buchnevich suddenly become well known prospects.
On top of that, the lineup for next season should be mostly fueled by youth, especially with the forwards. Young players like Chris Kreider, Jesper Fast and Kevin Hayes populate the four forward lines, with tons of potential amongst all of them.
Realistically, many of the Rangers young players can all have breakout seasons. Most of them have gotten invaluable experience during the team’s lengthy playoff runs, and for players like Emerson Etem and Oscar Lindberg, who are just joining the big club, there is no shortage of skilled players in the lineup for them to link up with. This past Thursday, Dominic Moore hosted his fourth annual Smashfest IV, a ping pong tournament with current and former NHL stars, including some Rangers players, to raise money for charity, including research into concussions and rare cancers.
This year, Kevin Klein, Emerson Etem and Derick Brassard all came to support their teammate, with former Rangers Michael Del Zotto, Cam Talbot, John Mitchell and Eric Lindros joining the tournament as well.
Many people know that teams will kick around a soccer ball as a warmup before a game, but what most people don’t know is that many locker rooms have ping pong tables for the players. This inspired Moore to create a charity tournament to benefit the Katie Moore and Steve Moore Foundations. Read the rest of this entry

Cam Talbot is the number one target for both the Buffalo Sabres and the Edmonton Oilers. Will he be able to bring a first round pick in return? Photo courtesy of Getty Images.
It was a busy day in the NHL today, with the league agreeing on a new salary cap, and trade rumors surrounding Cam Talbot coming to a head, with an actual offer being made to the Rangers.
This afternoon, Darren Dreger reported that a team (not specified) offered Glen Sather two second round picks for Cam Talbot, which he turned down. Sather realizes that Talbot is the most coveted goalie on the market, and wants to maximize his return.
Peter Chiarelli, the new GM of the Edmonton Oilers, would disagree. This afternoon, he said that the market for goaltenders is actually a buyer’s market. Read the rest of this entry
