Rangers continue with fourth round of cuts, Raanta designated as backup
The Rangers made a few more significant cuts following their win over the New Jersey Devils, cutting down the roster to just 25 players; 15 forwards, eight defenseman and two goalies. Vigneault will have to cut two more forwards and likely one defenseman.
The Rangers reassigned Luke Adam, Ryan Bourque, Brian Gibbons, Ryan Graves, Chris Summers, Mat Bodie, Brady Skjei and Magnus Hellberg, and they will report to Hartford’s training camp.
Vigneault’s latest roster moves means that we’re in the final stages of the cuts. Dylan McIlrath is still fighting for a spot and Jayson Megna, Oscar Lindberg and Jarret Stoll are still looking to get Tanner Glass out of the lineup.
This also means that Antti Raanta is the backup goalkeeper. I think this is the right move. He looked pretty good in preseason, moves well in the crease and has a good glove hand. With the Rangers defense in front of him, I think he’ll post strong numbers and play in about 21 games.
Vigneault said earlier that he would like to keep eight defenseman, but isn’t sure if he can with the current salary cap. Dylan McIlrath has been very impressive so far, demonstrating his improved decision making, skating, and remaining physical but not compromising his defensive responsibilities. The Rangers don’t want to lose him to waivers, so I think they’ll try and keep him on the roster.
Tanner Glass is purely still here because of his experience. AV knows him from Vancouver, and now from last season with the Rangers. He did say Glass doesn’t have a guaranteed roster spot, and honestly, he shouldn’t at this point. He hasn’t done anything to stand out from other players, and we’ve seen guys like Viktor Stalberg, Chris Kreider and Dan Girardi stand up for their teammates. It’s not necessary to waste a roster spot on someone who can fight and push other players around.
If I’m Vigneault, I’m cutting Glass and Megna after this. Stoll is a good faceoff guy and a solid fourth liner, Stalberg has been fantastic, especially on a line with Dominic Moore and Oscar Lindberg. That should be the fourth line for next season, with Fast getting bumped up a line.
I’m not sure whether the final cuts will be made after the fifth preseason game, or right before the season starts. But what I do know is this; Tanner Glass isn’t better than any of the remaining forwards, and try and keep McIlrath because he is drastically improved.
