Rangers give Jarret Stoll a second chance with one year deal

In a move that was totally unexpected, New York Rangers GM Jeff Gorton announced that the team had signed Jarret Stoll to a one year contract worth just $800k, in an attempt to bolster their center depth and improve at the faceoff dot.
Stoll’s future with the LA Kings was already in jeopardy before he was arrested on drug charges. Stoll was busted for smuggling cocaine and ecstasy into a Las Vegas pool party. Though the charges were initially a felony, he avoided jail time, agreeing to a plea deal and 32 hours of community service.
Last year, the Rangers were willing to take a chance on Ryan Malone, who was also arrested for cocain possession and released by the Lightning. While that didn’t work out, it was a one year deal and very cheap, so it did not impact them all that much. Read the rest of this entry
Gorton’s salary cap management leaves much needed wiggle room

Jeff Gorton and the Rangers have been very busy this week, signing almost all of their restricted free agents to new deals, and leaving valuable cap space open for the future. Gorton signed or re-signed Dylan McIlrath (article HERE), Magnus Hellberg (article HERE), JT Miller and Jesper Fast (article HERE), and Oscar Lindberg and Emerson Etem (article HERE).
What’s even better is that all of the players signed below what was their expected value. Oscar Lindberg, Emerson Etem, Jesper Fast and JT Miller signed for a combined cap hit of just $3.325 million. Now that’s great asset management.
If all of the listed cap hits are right, the Rangers have about $6.925 million left in free space. But that number, believe it or not, is realistically a bit higher. Also assuming that Dylan McIlrath ($600k) doesn’t make the team, and that Jayson Megna ($600k) is an AHL depth player, which is very likely, you can bump the Rangers available cap space to around $8.125 million. Rangers agree to terms with RFA Magnus Hellberg

Jeff Gorton, the General Manager of the New York Rangers, announced that the team has signed restricted free agent goaltender Magnus Hellberg, who was acquired in a trade from the Nashville Predators.
NBC Pro Hockey Talk’s Mike Halford reported that it was a two year deal.

Hellberg, 24, spent most of his time with the Milwaukee Admirals of the American Hockey League, the Predators’ AHL affiliate. He appeared in 38 games, finishing with a 15-10-6 record along with a 2.33 GAA and a .913 save percentage, as well as three shutouts. Read the rest of this entry
Rangers acquire Antti Raanta from Chicago

It didn’t take long for the Rangers to find their new backup goalie, trading for Antti Raanta from the Chicago Blackhawks, and sending prospect Ryan Haggerty their way.
Rangers fans should be familiar with Ryan Haggerty, as he has been around the team’s training camp and preseason games for quite some time now. He played his first season in the AHL, finishing with 33 points (15-18-33) in 76 regular season games. He never really did enough to stand out amongst the other prospects, and the Rangers didn’t have any room for him on the NHL roster. Haggerty will surely get a chance to compete for a spot on the Blackhawks roster, mainly because they are looking for cheap, effective forwards.
Antti Raanta was the third goalie for Chicago, behind Scott Darling and Corey Crawford on the roster. But it wasn’t because of his skill. The cap-strapped Blackhawks went with the cheaper, and solid option in Darling for the second half of the regular season and the playoffs. Read the rest of this entry
Rangers trade Carl Hagelin to Anaheim for Emerson Etem

The Rangers made their first big trade of the day, and it didn’t involve Cam Talbot (yet).
During the second round of the draft, the Rangers traded the rights to Carl Hagelin along with the 59th and 179th pick to the Anaheim Ducks for Emerson Etem and the 41st pick in the second round.
Carl Hagelin is an upcoming RFA, and was due for a big raise, something that the Rangers could not afford. Hagelin earned $2.25 million this past season, and was expected to command over $4 million. With Sather needing to sign Derek Stepan, as well as some other key players like Jesper Fast and JT Miller, there was very little room to sign Hagelin. Read the rest of this entry
